Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Union War Department Markers at Antietam

In the 1890's the War Department created a series of over 200 markers to help interpret the battle for visitors to the park. There were 124 Union markers, each telling the story of one of the higher-level commands in the Army of the Potomac. Some have disappeared over the years due to vandalism and accidents, but most are still in place.
