There are only a handful of Confederate monuments on the Antietam battlefield. For some years after the war the people of the devastated South had little money to spare for memorials. Confederate organizations later concentrated on battlefields that were better known or closer to home. An exception is Maryland, home state of the battlefield and to units on both sides.
