Along the old Hagerstown Pike between the town of Sharpsburg and the Dunker Church the high ground of the Piper was occupied by the center of the Confederate line, with Longstreet’s headquarters at the Piper Farm. Union forces threatened this sector after taking the Sunken Road, but were never able to break through.
