Indiana Monuments at Antietam


The monument to the 27th Indiana Infantry Regiment at Antietam  is on the north side of Cornfield Avenue. (Cornfield Avenue East tour map)

The regiment is also honored by a monument on the Chancellorsville battlefield and a monument at Gettysburg.

The 27th Indiana Infantry at Antietam

Colonel Silas Cosgrove commanded the regiment at Antietam by. It lost 41 men killed and 168 wounded out of 443 men engaged during intense fighting in the Cornfield.

About the monument

The monument is made from Barre, Vermont Granite. All the Indiana monuments at Antietam were designed by sculptor John K. Lowe and manufactured by the J.N. Forbes Company of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. They were dedicated on the 48th anniversary of the battle on September 17, 1910.

Location of the monument

The monument to the 27th Indiana Infantry is north of Sharpsburg on the north side of Cornfield Avenue 350 yards east of the old Hagerstown Pike, also known as Dunker Church Road. (39°28’52.1″N 77°44’40.9″W)
