Almost 100 monuments are on the battlefield at Antietam. Seventy five monuments are to units from ten Northern states. Six monuments are to Southern units. One, the State of Maryland monument, honors units that fought in both armies. Thirteen monuments honor individuals: several fallen leaders, a future President of the United States, and a civilian who cared for the wounded,. The largest monument of all honors the anonymous private soldier who carried the burden of the bloody day.
