Confederate Monuments at Antietam

“Dement’s Battery”

The monument to the 1st Maryland Battery (C.S.A.) is on Harpers Ferry Road just north of Branch Avenue. (Branch Avenue South tour map) It was dedicated on September 20, 1961.

The battery was commanded at Antietam by Captain William F. Dement. He was a farmer before the war, and became the First Lieutenant of the battery when it was formed in Richmond in July 1861. Dement was promoted to captain and took over command of the battery in June of 1862 when the original battery commander, R. Andrews Snowden took over the battalion and was promoted to major.

The Battery under the command of Capt. William F. Dement occupied a position in the field in the rear of this marker. The monument to the Maryland troops is near the Dunkard Church.

The battery was probably quite a distance “in the rear of this marker” as there is evidence that it was at Harpers Ferry until September 16 and was not one of the two batteries of Ewell’s Division that made it across the river to Sharpsburg in time for the battle.
