Georgia erected identical statues honoring her Confederate veterans on the battlefields of Gettysburg and Antietam during the centennial of the Civil War in 1961. They were dedicated in September of that year. Sculptor Harry Sellers created the monuments. Marietta Memorials fabricated them. The monuments are composed of Georgia blue granite standing 15 1/2 feet high, with the state seal of Georgia on the front and back.

Georgia sent 40 infantry regiments, 7 artillery batteries and one cavalry legion to Antietam. Major General James Longstreet, the second ranking officer in the Army of Northern Virginia, was also from Georgia.
