The monument to the 3rd Indiana Cavalry Regiment is north of State Route 34 just west of Antietam Creek. (Boonsboro Pike tour map) There is also a monument to the regiment at Gettysburg.
The 3rd Indiana Cavalry Regiment at Antietam
Major George H. Chapman commanded the 3rd Indiana Cavalry at the Battle of Antietam. He was born in Massachusetts in 1832 but his family moved to Indiana when he was 6. Chapman joined the navy as a midshipman in 1847, serving on the frigates USS Cumberland and USS Constitution. He resigned when his uncle died in 1850. Chapman returned to Indiana, becoming a lawyer and publishing a newspaper. In 1860 he became the assistant clerk to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Chapman became major of the 3rd Indiana Cavalry in November of 1861.
About the monument
The monument is made from Barre, Vermont Granite. Sculptor John K. Lowe designed all of the Indiana monuments at Antietam. They were manufactured by the J.N. Forbes Company of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and were dedicated on September 17, 1910.

Location of the monument
The monument to the 3rd Indiana Cavalry at Antietam is east of Sharpsburg on the north side of Maryland Route 34. It is about 260 yards west of the bridge over Antietam Creek and in front of the monument to Robert E. Lee. (39°27’51.0″N 77°43’40.9″W)
