Monuments to Individuals at Antietam


The monument to Lieutenant Colonel John L Stetson at Antietam is on the east side of State Route 65. (Philadelphia Brigade Park tour map) It was dedicated in 1919.

Lieutenant Colonel Stetson was second in command of the 59th New York Infantry Regiment, whose monument is a short distance to the east. He was a lawyer from Plattsburgh, on Lake Champlain, and was 26 years old at the time of the battle. At the beginning of the war he raised and commanded Company E of the 16th New York Infantry Regiment. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 59th New York in March of 1862. Stetson’s wife, Lucy, died in 1860 at the age of 24. They had no children.
