Maryland Monuments at Antietam
There are two monuments to the 5th Maryland Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) at Antietam, both near the Sunken Road (Bloody Lane) off Richardson Avenue. The main monument is on the north side of the Sunken Lane. It was dedicated on September 17, 1890. A monument to the Regiment’s Companies A & I is a short distance to the north from the main monument. (Sunken Road west tour map) It was dedicated on May 30, 1900.
Major Leopold Blumenberg commanded the 5th Maryland Infantry at the Battle of Antietam. He was wounded in the assault on the Sunken Road. According to one account, Captain William W. Bamberger briefly took over until he, too, was wounded, when Captain Salome Marsh then took command for the rest of the day. Another account has Captain Ernest Faehtz taking command from Blumenberg.
