Pennsylvania monuments at Antietam


The monument at Antietam to the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment is on Mansfield Avenue. (Smoketown Road North tour map) It was dedicated on September 17, 1904.

The 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry was commanded at the Battle of Antietam by Major James A. Congdon. It was on independent duty with the Provost Marshal rounding up stragglers and handling Confederate prisoners behind the First and Twelfth Corps lines.

The monument to the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry is north of Sharpsburg on the north side of Mansfield Avenue 78 yards west of Smoketown Road (39.484396° N, 77.742683° W).
