At the time of the battle a small, nameless wooded area stood between the Poffenberger and Miller farms on the north end of the battlefield. Historians dubbed it the North Woods. Over the years the woods were cut down and turned to field. The National Park Service is now engaged in a long-term project of recreating the North Woods in its historic location.
