The farm of Phillip Fry is on the north side of Boonsboro Pike on the east side of Antietam Creek. Next to the main road into Sharpsburg from the east and on a hill with a good view of the valley of Antietam Creek and the high ground on the other side, it was a natural choice for McClellan as army headquarters. As the battle was underway an ambulance was ordered to take Mrs. Fry and her children to safety at Jacob Keedy’s farm near Keedysville.
The house was used as a field hospital during the battle. General Hooker was brought here after he was wounded in the heel in the morning attack and had his wound dressed before he returned in an ambulance to the 1st Corps. General Richardson was brought here after receiving his mortal wound at the Sunken Road. Today it is owned by the National Park and houses the Field Hospital Museum.

The view looks northwest at Pry House, McClellan’s headquarters, from the parking are north of Boonsboro Pike, Maryland Route 34.
