Notes:
(1) Brigadier General John B. Hood took command of Whiting’s Division on July 26 as senior brigadier when Major General William H.C. Whiting went on medical leave. Three of the division’s brigades had been transferred to A.P. Hill’s Division, leaving just two brigades in what is often referred to as a demi-division. Colonel Wofford commanded Hood’s Brigade as senior colonel, and Colonel Law commanded the other brigade as senior colonel of what was still officially Whiting’s Brigade. In October two brigades would be added and Hood would be promoted to major general and officially given command of Hood’s Division.
(2) Colonel John C.G. Key was forced to give up command due to illness after South Mountain
(3) Lieutenant Colonel Owen K. McLemore had been mortally wounded at South Mountain on 9/15
(4) Lieutenant Colonel David Humphreys and Major John Blair were both wounded before Colonel Stone, leaving Lieutenant Moody as senior surviving officer
