Branch Avenue follows the high ground between Antietam Creek and the village of Sharpsburg. It roughly follows the furthest advance of the Union 9th Corps after they crossed Antietam Creek. The Confederate defenders were forced back into the streets of Sharpsburg, but A.P. Hill’s late afternoon attack on the southern end of the Federal line forced the Federals to withdraw to the bluffs over the stream.
Today Branch Avenue heads south from Rodman Avenue. There is no access from the modern Burnside Bridge Road, which is crossed by an overpass. The Old Burnside Bridge Road leads about a half mile to a parking area and walking paths accessing the Burnside Bridge area. A trail that starts at the Otto Farm House on Old Burnside Bridge Road leads south through the farmyard and along a scenic farm lane. Branch Avenue continues south and ends at Harpers Ferry Road a half mile south of Sharpsburg.
