North of the Dunker Church the Hagerstown Pike saw the opening of the battle on September 17. In the 1960s new road construction moved traffic of Maryland Route 65, the main highway north of Sharpsburg, a short distance to the west from in front of the Visitor Center and the Dunker Church.
