Here in the morning of September 17th Hooker’s dawn attack launched Seymour’s and Rickett’s Union Divisions at Trimble’s Confederate Brigade. Trimble lost about one third of his men and was replaced by Law’s brigade, who counterattacked north into the Cornfield and were thrown back by the Union Twelfth Corps.
As the fighting began to die down on the northern end of the battlefield the Federal Sixth Corps took up a position here. Batteries went into action against the Confederate line around the Dunker Church. A late afternoon attack by the 7th Maine against the Piper farm buildings was thrown back with heavy losses.
