The view looks west along Starke Avenue towards where it ends at Maryland Route 65 in the distance at the bottom of the hill. The West Woods and the Philadelphia Brigade Park is on the left. Markers to the Union 1st Corps, 1st Division, 3rd Brigade and the 12th Corps, 2nd Division, 3rd Brigade are along the avenue on the right.

Starke Avenue is named after Confederate Brigadier General William E. Starke, one of six general officers killed or mortally wounded in the Battle of Antietam. A monument to General Starke is a short distance to the south in Philadelphia Brigade Park.
