The Sunken Road at Antietam

The view faces northwest along the east end of the Sunken Road (Bloody Lane) from the parking area by the Observation Tower. (Sunken Road East tour map) At this point the Sunken Road is a grassy trail with no vehicular traffic; cars now travel Richardson Avenue on the left, which did not exist during the battle. The west end of the Sunken Road still sees traffic to the Roulette farm.

In the center of the view is the 2nd Delaware Infantry monument in front of four War Department tablets to Richardson’s Division and its three brigades, Brooke’s, Caldwell’s and Meagher’s. In the distance in front of the trees is the 132nd Pennsylvania Infantry monument. To its left on the other side of the snake rail fence is the mortuary cannon to Confederate General George B. Anderson. Behind Anderson’s monument is the monument to the 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. In the distance, the Visitor Center is visible on the horizon in the gap between the trees.
