This marker is one of the roughly two dozen that have disappeared over the years, but records provide its location and text. It was on the west side of Hagerstown Pike, near the Hagerstown Pike bypass.

Doubleday’s Division, First Army Corps

Brig. Gen. Abner Doubleday, Commanding.

(September 16, 1862.)

Doubleday’s Division crossed the Antietam at Pry’s Ford on the afternoon of Sept. 16, and moved across the fields in a westerly direction in a column parallel to the other divisions.

It reached this point after dark and formed on the extreme right of the Corps, Hofmann and Patrick’s Brigades in line parallel to this road and facing west. Phelps’ and Gibbon’s Brigades about 200 yards to the rear in support.

Outposts were established in the fields to the west, connecting with those of Meade’s Division on the left.
