Indiana Monuments at Antietam


The State of Indiana monument at Antietam is on Hagerstown Pike just north of intersection with Cornfield Avenue.  (Hagerstown Pike tour map) It was dedicated on September 17, 1910.

One cavalry and four infantry regiments from Indiana fought at Antietam. Each has its own marker at the position where it was engaged as well as being honored on the state monument.

About the State of Indiana monument at Antietam

The state monument consists of a 35 foot obelisk which stands on a 15 foot tall square base supported by a 22 foot wide platform. The platform is bordered by a parapet whose posts are shaped as artillery shells. All are of Barre, Vermont granite. A bronze plaque and the state seal are on the western side. The monument as well as the five unit markers was designed by sculptor John K. Lowe and manufactured by the J.N. Forbes Company of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The cost of the monument was $15,000.
