Philadelphia Brigade Park was created in 1895 from eleven acres of land purchased from local farmer George Poffenberger by the Philadelphia Brigade Association. The Association placed the monument to their brigade’s four regiments in the center of the park, which was landscaped and surrounded by a fence with an iron gate. Maintenance and access issues eventually led to the park being sold to the National Park Service for $1 in 1940.
